Are You a People Pleaser?
Are you engaging in damaging behaviours that might identify you as a "people pleaser"? Are you struggling set healthy boundaries, despise saying "no" for fear of rejection or confrontation and do you believe that making time to care for yourself is selfish and unnecessary? Are you driven by external validation thereby prioritising other people over yourself.
Having personally traversed this path of putting others needs before my own, struggling with enforcing boundaries and a experiencing a tangible fear of saying no for fear of confrontation, I understand the challenges and emotions you may be experiencing.
I intimately recall the realization that I had become someone who consistently prioritized others’ needs over my own, I mean don’t get me wrong I am an empathetic, caring person who loves to help others until I began to notice a pattern where I struggled with setting healthy boundaries, and grappled with the anxiety of uttering a simple ‘NO’ to clients, family, or friends, fearing their disappointment, rejection or confrontation. This was closely followed by frustration at never having time or money to do the things I enjoyed, exhaustion when the expectation of having to do everything for everyone was overwhelming, feeling neglected and unhappy with my appearance because I never had time to be concerned with exercise or self-care and then, worse of all, the anger of feeling completely out of control of my own life.
My coaching philosophy revolves around recognizing the admirable aspects of your genuine self including those who aspire to go above and beyond helping others or perhaps those aspiring to gain their dream role at work, while steering clear of the pitfalls associated with people-pleasing behavior.
While being generous, compassionate and even driven can be rewarding, the KEY lies in ensuring that these qualities ENHANCE your life, rather than COMPROMISE your emotional and mental health or become a way to measure your self worth through seeking external validation.
